Ashtanga Yoga and the Movement System – Prevention and Therapy

Our movement system comprises muscular, skeletal and neural components and is intimately influenced by our thoughts, breath and heart beat and provides a fascinating experimental field for developing a yoga practice. Via the movement system we can facilitate health and healing but it can also be prone to injury and a source of trouble and disorder. Yoga has huge potential for the prevention of injury and in the therapy and reduction of dysfunctions of the movement system. 


Peter Greve
spent several years studying yoga under the guidance of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore from 1988 and has been teaching Ashtanga yoga for over 20 years. 

As a professional clinical physical and manual therapist, he integrates functional anatomy and biomechanics to fortify the effect of yoga practice on health promotion, therapy, rehabilitation and dysfunction prevention. His special field of interest is the identification of movement-system impairments and their resolution and keeping up to date with the latest research in the field. 

As a keen student of yoga philosophy and Sanskrit, Peter takes an integral approach to yoga. He is co-director of Die Yogapraxis center in Berlin where he teaches Mysore style and one-on-one therapy and is a sought after lecturer on teacher trainings and further education courses for teachers in Germany and internationally.

Thereby we will explore the following questions: 
What are movement system dysfunctions and how do we recognize them?  
To which disorders or diagnosis do movement system dysfunctions point?  
Which knowledge of musculoskeletal disorders enhances our competence as yoga practitioners or teachers?  
What signs and symptoms are hints for a serious pathology, which should be checked by a health professional?  
What disorders or diagnoses are we positively affecting when reducing movement system dysfunctions through yoga practice?  
How can we adapt asana practices to the individual needs of yoga students or to our own individual needs?  
How can we reinforce the effects of a good and healthy yoga practice by hands-on assists and adjustments?

As workshop participant you can expect to: 
Gain, consolidate or broaden your knowledge of anatomy and functional anatomy of the musculoskeletal/movement system. 
Acquire basic knowledge about movement system functions and dysfunctions. 
Become acquainted with common musculoskeletal disorders, diagnoses and functional conspicuities in a framework of yoga.

Learn to understand asana from within, according to their functions and about good alignment.

Encounter a yoga practice that aims at promoting health and healing and allows you to experience and feel grounded in yourself (svastha).
